Following the russian river Volga the River Danube is the second longest river of Europe and one of the oldest and most important european routes of trading and traffic. Ten countries are touched or transited by the Danube which makes this river to an international stream “par excellence”.
During the governance of the Roman Empire the rivers character was beside this “relating” one as well a clearly deviding one: the river danube has been the hard-fought border in the north-east of the Roman Empire and according to this very well armed with a strong weir system.
Nowadays the items “Danube-Limes” or “Wet Limes” ar used for the deviding aspect of former times. And even today mighty Limes-monuments along the river as far as to the Black Sea are witnesses of this foretime.
Our intention now is to use this international connecting and relating character of the river Danube as a possibility to engage ourselves for the further merging of people and cultures. At the same time we’d like to direct everyone’s attention to this historical Limes heritage; finally this weir system came out as a connecting component despite its dividing and protective character.
That’s why two different hairlines (Danube and Limes) should knot to ONE filament, which leads into a common and peaceful future, without leaving behind the sensitising for the historical and cultural heritage of the Limes.
As a contribution to reach this goal in december we are going to ship with our “Donauperle” from Passau to Sulina at the Black Sea. On that “trip” we are transporting besides the both of us our motobikes and as the most important “thing”: An invitation to young people all over the way along the Danube, invitations to every single country we pass. What we are aiming for is to invite the youth for a visit in passau in summer 2010 for a week of friendship, cultural excanchge – just to get to know each other! For us this is only one more opportunity of engagement in the growing together of different people, different cultures, different religions … an opportunity to convey international understanding and tolerance to something so far “strange”…
To show our seeriousness in this project is the reason why we do this tour in wintertimes – in summertime nearly erveryone would like to do it. And we want to produce a book as well as a movie about the whole thin. And while we ar on the river or on the road we try to keep a diary updatet, which you could visit here. There you also can leave a comment – if you want to do so.
And if you want to participate in our “Danube-Friendship-Week” in Passau in summer 2010 you can fill in an application form here – right now!
